Barrenjoey head, from the air
Date: 09/01/06
This is the first in an ongoing "Photo of the Day" series that I am running. The first collection of photos will be taken from a couple of helicopter flights that I went on earlier this year, the first of which took us over the Northern Beaches of Sydney. This photo was taken at the furthest point of our trip, rounding Barrenjoey head before heading back to Bankstown Airport via Sydney Harbour.
The Barrenjoey Lighthouse was constructed on the headland (which is part of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park) in 1881, and is accessible from Palm Beach via a walking track.
Prints, cards and posters of this image are now available.
Bongin Bongin Bay, from the air
Date: 09/01/06
Looking inland over Bongin Bongin Bay, just north of Mona Vale Beach, in Northern Sydney. A popular place for a swim on a hot day.

Long Reef Point, from the air
Date: 09/01/06
Heading further south in this daily series, this photo shows the landscape looking South along the coast over Long Reef Point and the golf course.

Lake Burrogorang, from the air (aka Rain, Dam It!)
Date: 03/04/06
From a more recent helicopter flight, this time heading west into the Lower Blue Mountains near Sydney, we were treated to spectacular views on bright clear day. This scene of Lake Burrogorang, which feeds the Warragamba Dam shows just how low Sydney's main water supply is becoming.
Landscape near Silver Peak Mine, Yerranderie
Date: 03/04/06
Dubbed "The Nearest Wilderness to Sydney", Yerranderie is a unique and isolated slice of history, nestled in the Blue Mountains. Surrounded by old silver mines, it is accessible by car (weather permitting), 4WD or by air (if you're lucky ;) ). This photo was taken near Silver Peak mine, with Yerranderie Peak in the background (if I'm not mistaken). A modest entrance fee offers visitors access to Yerranderie "private town" and surrounds.
Prints, cards and posters of this image are now available.
Lake Burragorang, from the air (aka Serpentine)
Date: 03/04/06
Another aerial shot of Lake Burragorang snaking through Sydney's lower Blue Mountains towards Warragamba Dam.

Eiffel Tower
Date: 13/01/06
Taken on a chilly Winter's night in January. I was near Paris for a week to help train a number of developers from the "Big 5" European offices, and we did a little sight-seeing as an evening social activity one night.
Willoughby sunrise
Date: 17/04/06
I'm pretty sure the world looks pretty fantastic at sunrise most days, but who can get up that early?
Canberra Sunrise
Date: 18/04/05
This was the only other time last year that I was awake rediculously early with camera in tow, so it's probably the last sunrise I'll make you endure for some time to come.
Mont Saint Michel (Normandy, France)
Date: 19/04/06
This one's from a trip Alex and I took around Western Europe last year. We went for a day trip with Alex's sister to this rather unique place. Well, it would be unique if it weren't for it's Cornish counterpart, but we didn't see it, so it doesn't count. :p
Prints, cards and posters of this image are now available.
Night rainbow
Date: 05/03/06
A slightly less cliched view of Sydney city across the harbour as seen from a newly restored piece of land on Waverton Peninsula (North of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House). The land, once home to a BP oil refinery, built in 1923, was handed over to the local council in 2003 and despite hopes to have the park finished by the end of that year, it was finally opened to the public around March 2005. more info

Trianguality
Date: 11/03/06
A mess of straight lines, shapes, geometry ... and a guy drinking from a can. Taken in Hong Kong last month, near Lan Kwai Fong.

Nope, no trolls here, just us shutterbugs.
Gladesview
Date: 02/04/06
Sunset, looking West from the top of Gladesville Bridge. I think I was too late for the "money shot", but this image still works for me.

Palais Longchamp, Marseille, France (3x3 'panorama')
Date: 27/04/06
Update: Prints, cards and posters of this image are now available.
Although I'm not the first to take this particular photo, this might be the only digital shot to weigh in at over 30 megapixels after stitching. To put that in perspective, this image would be 35" wide when printed @200dpi. This place really lifted my mood after a run-in with a pickpocket earlier in the day.
From ProvenceBeyond...
The Palais Longchamp, built in 1862-69, stands at the entrance to the Longchamp park. Guarded by four stone lions, the entrance is a magnificent fountain complex, with raging bulls trying to clamber out of the top and flanked by wide stairs going up either side. This fine fountain is, in fact, a cunningly disguised water tower. The water tower and buildings that make up the Palais were built as a commemorative monument to the arrival of new canal bringing water from the Durance river. The final section of the canal passes across the Longchamp Park in a stone aqueduct.
The Fine Arts Museum is located up the stairs on the left, and the Natural History Museum is up the stairs on the right.
Stitched with hugin; it's free and awesome and open source and runs on Linux and stuff.
Colosseum panorama
Date: 25/04/06
It's big (188m x 156m), it's old (80 A.D), it's full of tourists. Nuff said.
Roman Forum (panorama)
Date: 25/04/06
Next door to yesterday's PotD lives this assembly of ruined buildings at the core of ancient Rome. This panorama was taken from a vantage point on Palatine Hill.

Digging into the archives, this shot comes from a Medieval banquet back in the era of 2002. This is Lachlan, with a look of deep concentration on his face.
TV Tower
Date: 02/08/02
This shot, also from 2002, was one of those "Aha!" moments. After getting home to the old place in Artarmon, I looked up at the TV tower and noticed the cloud formation. After running upstairs to grab my now old but trusty compact digi, I rattled off a couple of long shots on my now old but trusty tripod. It's grainy, it's blurry and it's overexposed, but it still has a certain appeal for me.
Green run
Date: 29/07/02
Yet another shot from 2002, this was taken on the way down from one of the ski fields near Queenstown, NZ.
A Shrubbery!
Date: 08/08/03
In keeping with the alpine theme, this time from 2003, skiing in and around Guthega, NSW.
Don's bibs and bobs
Date: 21/06/03
Stretching my old camera's exposure and aperture to it's limits, I was quite happy with how this off-camera flash lit shot came out. It was shot as found on an old abandoned boat, a beautiful compostion of colour and shapes just waiting for someone to come along and capture it.
Huntsman vs Siamese Fighter
Date: 09/03/03
This one was a case of being in the right place at the right time. Alex, Dave and I had a resident huntsman or 2 at our place in Crows Nest, and one day, it got more than it bargained for when it stuck its front legs into the fish bowl. After the fighter had a nip at the spider, our hairy friend on the left retreated to the side of the bowl where I quickly snapped off a few shots, trying to get them to pose together. :P

I think this is the same spider from yesterday's "showdown" PotD. These spiders don't bother me as long as they keep their distance and, besides being frightening little creatures up close, they are relatively easy to photograph.
I really should clone out that ball of fluff though.
Big Bidder
Date: 01/05/06
The next few PotD's come from the finals of the recent Australian Ultimate Frisbee Championships, held in Sydney.
Here, Alex "Sparky" Spark of Fakulti P (NSW, 2nd place) makes a huge lunge for the disc in the finals.
Air time
Date: 08/05/06
5 Chilly (VIC, 1st place) and Fakulti P (NSW, 2nd place) players sky for the disc, while Alex Wong (Fakulti) wonders if he's not quite in the right spot. Tom Brennan (Fakulti) got to the disc first, tapping it out of reach.

Eugenie from Southside (NSW), sneaks a snappy forehand past an Ishtar (VIC) defender (Karen Parker, I think?) in the semi-finals.
John Oxley
Date: 15/05/06
Uh oh, the PotD queue ran dry! The good news is, no more frisbee photos (I can tell by the silence how popular they were).
So, without further ado, a few shots from August 2005 from a visit to the Sydney Heritage Fleet (formerly Australian Heritage Fleet) workshops in Pyrmont. I joined a number of other DSLR Users, and we were free to explore the yard, workshops and, best of all, the boats. This shot is of their biggest current project, the John Oxley
Hull
Date: 16/05/06
A B&W of the hull of the John Oxley. This bit's actually in relatively good nick!

Doorway
Date: 19/05/06
A doorway leading through to the bow of the John Oxley. Nothing in particular interests me in this image, but the composition keeps drawing my attention. I don't know why.
